Abstract

The paper examines an unstudied manuscript from the archive of the Renaissance scholar Joachim Gruev. As early as 1861 he was teaching foundations of aesthetics and ethnography in the Bulgarian secular school. These were the first attempts to introduce both scientific disciplines into the secular school as a source of information on national identity and national consciousness.
