CHOICES AND STRATEGIES FOR TRANSLATION WHEN MANAGING POLYSEMY, PUNS AND CULTURAL REFERENCES
Abstract
The following article deals with translation issues and strategies regarding the translation or interpretation of character names (with various connotations), puns, and cultural references. We take into account various works of fiction and popular cinema, both directed at young adults and children. Jan Van Coillie and his Ten Strategies for Translation are taken into account, as well as the motivation of the translator, along with linguistic and extralinguistic factors, and the mentality and perspective of ever-shifting cultures and societies. The focus here is put on translation from English into Bulgarian, as English presents translators with a number of issues since English has a high number of polysemantic words, and some cultural references have become quite abundant in the past couple of decades.
