20 YEARS OF UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE AND LITARATURE IN COMPARISON WITH ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL STATUS OF RUSSIAN LANGUAGE IN THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA
Abstract
The article deals with the 20th anniversary of Ukrainian language and literature academic program in Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zagreb State University. The social and academic status of Ukrainian language is compared with the status of Russian language, lectures of which are held since 1874. The comparison includes following sociolinguistic factors: usage of
Ukrainian and Russian language outside academic circles, as a first language of national minorities, as a global language, Croatian contacts with Ukrainian and Russian language in World War I, after the 1917 Russian Revolution and today's situation in Croatia.
