TOWARD THE PROBLEM OF CONVEYING CONNOTATIVE MEANINGS OF PROPER NOUNS IN TRANSLATION
Abstract
The subject of this paper is the matter of conveying culture–specific connotative meanings of Russian proper nouns (more specifically precedential names) in translating a text. Various examples of translation of literary texts, containing connotative proper names, are observed. A conclusion is made that the number of the possible translation strategies in such cases depends on the dominating pragmatic function (axiological or emotive) of the name in the context.
