The subject of this paper is the matter of conveying culture–specific connotative meanings of Russian proper nouns (more specifically precedential names) in translating a text. Various examples of translation of literary texts, containing connotative proper names, are observed. A conclusion is made that the number of the possible translation strategies in such cases depends on the dominating pragmatic function (axiological or emotive) of the name in the context.en_US
