EVALUATIVE ADJECTIVES: CHALLENGES OF TRANSLATING FROM RUSSIAN (BASED ON RUSSIAN TEXT OF M. BULGAKOV’S “MASTER AND MARGARITA” NOVEL AND ITS BULGARIAN AND ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS)
Abstract
The comparison of Russian evaluative adjectives and their translation into Bulgarian and English gives valuable information from the point of view of contrastive linguistics and the theory and practice of translation. Slavonic languages are known to be similar in many aspects which makes the translation process even more complex, e.g. because of the differences in expression of an adjective’s intensity in terms of comparative degree, superlative degree and accentuation. The target text in English gives the researcher a wider view over the translation mechanisms and confirms/rejects/redirects the conclusions the researcher might have previously reached.
