This experimental study investigates the role played by different acoustic parameters on voice-based gender identification. A perceptual experiment was jointly conducted on French and American English hearers. The results show that intonation is an important clue for the French hearers but not for the American English participants, who are more sensitive to mean F0. This suggests that one’s mother tongue plays a role in the strategies adopted to identify the speakers' gender by voice.en_US
