RETURN TO THE DESERTED BUILDING SITE: THE MARITIME NOVEL WHICH ANDRIC NEVER WROTE
Abstract
In 1968, Ivo Andriс told Svetlozar Igov he was writing a novel about the Balkan man meeting the sea. Until then, several excerpts from that novel having the Bosnian clerk Dražeslav as its main character had been published. However, no further publications have appeared, neither have any been found in his archive after his death. In 1989, Svetlozar Igov published the fragments of the novel written so far together with other works by Andric dedicated to waters, the sea and the sun under the title Летуване на юг [On Summer Holiday Down South], accompanied by the essay „The Balkan Man and the Sea, or Ivo Andric’s Unwritten Marine Novel.“ In this study the editor outlines the compiling principles behind his construction of Ivo Andric’s marine novel.
