WHAT HAS GROWN OVER THE HILLS IN PLOVDIV? (BASED ON THE NOVEL THE HILL BY DIMITAR KIRKOV)
Abstract
The author of this paper offers an overview of the plants growing over Plovdiv Hills on the basis of Dimitar Kirkov’s novel The Hill. The analysis of the extracted names indicates not only the variety of the wild flora of Plovdiv, but also becomes a pretext for reflecting on the motivation behind names of phytonyms in Polish and Bulgarian. Finally, the aforementioned analysis presents the difficulties met by every lexicologist dealing with names of plants in Slavic languages and points out possible relevant reasons.
