FROM ‘DUTY OF THE REGUEST’ TO ‘THE RIGHT TO FIGHT’ OR ON THE PLACE OF BULGARIAN LANGUAGE IN THE REVIVAL OF PLOVDIV
Abstract
The subject of the current investigation is Bulgarian society in the multiethnic environment of Plovdiv during the 1820s – 1870s. On this basis there have been analysed the contacts and relationships between the three main language formations – Bulgarian, Greek, and Turkish. The specific nature of their occurrence accounts for their differentiation in certain stages. I have also examined the factors that explain the late integration of Plovdiv within the nationwide educational, cultural and religious movements.
