The subject of the current investigation is Bulgarian society in the multiethnic environment of Plovdiv during the 1820s – 1870s. On this basis there have been analysed the contacts and relationships between the three main language formations – Bulgarian, Greek, and Turkish. The specific nature of their occurrence accounts for their differentiation in certain stages. I have also examined the factors that explain the late integration of Plovdiv within the nationwide educational, cultural and religious movements.en_US
