The speeches of Pierre Poivre have suggested a political orientation to the Colony and a moral ideal to the settlers. One cannot see in Poivre just a greedy settler, a trafficker of fine spices. Barthélémy Huet de Froberville published in 1803 in Isle de France Sidner or The Dangers of Imagination, the first novel in the southern hemisphere written in French that he dedicated to Goethe.
