The present paper deals with two early novels by Thomas Hardy –
Desperate Remedies and, only peripherally, with A Pair of Blue Eyes – and
brings into focus his inclination to create verbal descriptions that display a
distinctive photopgraphic sensibility. His artistic technique was inspired by his
architectural education and pronounced interest in art. Scholars (Wolfgang Iser,
Tsotcho Boyadzhiev, Roland Barthes, Hans-Georg Gadamer, etc.) have
advanced reasonable explanations of how his method is used in literature.
