OBSERVATIONS ON THE ONOMATOPOETIC WORDS OF TURKISH LANGUAGE
Abstract
Up to now, the parts of speech and grammatical function of Turkish onomatopoetic words remain controversial. In the academic circles, people hold different opinions on this problem. Some think that Turkish onomatopoetic words are notional words; some believe that they are function words, and others maintain that they are neither notional words nor function words, and they
should be classified independently. Turkish onomatopoetic words can imitate natural sounds, showing that they have lexical meanings. Meanwhile, Turkish onomatopoetic words having notional functions further represent that they bear the features of notional words. Accordingly, Turkish onomatopoetic words should be classified among the notional words instead of the function words.
