The paper considers the Russian translations of Robert Burns’s ballad John Barleycorn by, respectively, E. Bagritskiy and S. Marshak in the aspect of discourse approach. The study of literary translation from the rhetorical point of view made it possible to develop a model of the discourse analysis by implementing reference, creative and reception competences. The results of the comparative analysis urge us to face the need to pose the problem of creative competence of Russian translators as a source of poetics of secondary expressiveness. S. Marshak created a merry feast song in translation using the techniques of Russian folk poetics, focusing on the intersection of romantic tradition (legend) and dance song. Reception competence strengthens the poetics of secondary expressiveness of Bagritskiy’s translation.en_US
