CELTIC BORROWINGS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Abstract
In the course of its existence English was brought into contact with at
least three other languages, the languages of the Celts, the Romans, and the
Scandinavians. As a result of these contacts certain linguistic features were
borrowed, especially additions to its vocabulary. The present article deals
with the Celtic influence on the English language. It gives a brief overview of
the Celtic varieties of English and the Celtic Hypothesis.
