One of the most widely acclaimed novels in the first decade of the 21st century is Daniel Kehlman’s Die Vermessung der Welt, which is an attempt at rewriting world history counting on two historical personae, which the novel transforms into fictional characters – Alexander von Humboldt (1769 – 1859) and Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777 – 1855). What versions does Kehlman come up with, what is the kind of world history that he presents, how do imagination, facts and science exist in a writing that turns out not only representative of the contemporary world, but extremely popular, as well, are some of the questions this text is trying to give answers to.en_US
