The article examines Lancelot’s feelings in the 13th-century romance Prose Lancelot. The rhetorical means used by the anonymous authors of the romance reveal not only the traditional character but also the emotions of the model knight of the Round Table. The common places reflecting Lancelot’s feelings contribute to the dissemination of an emotional standard and a model of behaviour perceived probably as an example to follow in the French secular culture of some feudal elite circles during the 13th century. The numerous versions of the romance Prose Lancelot prove not only the text’s spreading but also the appearance of chivalric emotional communities where the chivalric values got imposed by the feelings arising among the audience.en_US
