The present article is focused on some Balkan Turkish toponymes originating from the substrate Greek and Bulgarian toponymy. The accent is put on the geographical distribution of the early Turkish oykonimes – these from the eastern part of the peninsula and from Sothern Macedonia have been loaned from Greek unlike these from Central and Eastern Macedonia and Albania that have obvious Bulgarian origin. The Turkish phonetic adoption of the Balkan toponymy, the influence exerted on the formation of the Turkish toponymy by the political and cultural factors are also examined. A new hypothesis about the initial meaning of the oykonym Istanbul is introduced.en_US
