Using the concept of “genius loci” of the architect Christian NorbergSchultz and the essay of the German sociologist Georg Simmel “The Metropolis and Mental Life”, the article examines the way in which the city through its special atmosphere has became a force that exerts a strong influence on the life of its residents in the early twentieth century. This modern and aggressive type of the modern city is present in the novels of Boshko Tokin and Alfred Döblin – instead a decor of action, the city converts itself into a protagonist.en_US
