The present paper examines the presence of light as a narrative instrument in Thomas Hardy’s novel The Return of the Native. Attention is paid to how the author uses it uniquely and variously in order to develop plot. Some scientific definitions of phenomena are provided and a categorisation of the uses of light is made, the focus being mainly on the revelatory function of light. The employed critical perspectives are founded on phenomenology and hermeneutics.en_US
