    Abstract
The object of this study is the phenomenon of retelling in the modern Bulgarian language and its corresponding translation equivalents in English. The main reason for choosing this topic is the difficulty in translating retelling forms, due to the fact that English has not got a grammatical retelling. We identified several outcomes by using a comparative method and searching for the functional equivalents of the Bulgarian retelling forms in literary texts translated into English . The first conclusion is that Bulgarian has a whole system of special forms for expressing a secondary retelling while English has no grammatical retelling. However, the meaning of a secondary retelling in English is expressed through alternative peripheral modifiers. The Bulgarian complex verb forms are replaced by Past Simple tense or in some cases with Past Perfect tense. Translators use modal constructions that, instead of presenting a sequence of actions, express the action as possible to happen in the future. Different types of Conditional are found as the equivalent of some Bulgarian refined forms.
