The paper aims to explore the possibilities to transfer the culture-specific connotative meanings of Russian zoomorphic nouns used in literary texts in translation to Bulgarian. For that purpose, the connotative potential and the usage functions of the target units are analyzed, the relevance of the translator's choice in published translations is commented and some alternative decisions are suggested. A conclusion is made that the level of equivalence between the original and the translation in such cases depends on the nominative and expressive capacity of both languages, on the functions of the connotative unit in the context and on the linguocultural competence of the translator.en_US
