This text covers Ivan Vazov's efforts to create and establish the Bulgarian theatrical scene as a national cultural institution. His social, critical and literary work in that regard began during his time as a writer in Plovdiv and continued for 40 years until his death. Vazov as a playwright is unable to meet his own requirements as a critic, despite his publications from the early 80s insistently calling on writers for a higher thematic and stylistic level in current works of drama and comedy. In the beginning of the 80s the discrepancy between his poetic talent and his skills as a playwright is significant. This is illustrated by the analysis of the drama “Ruska” and the poem “Zagorka”, included in the article.en_US
