NONCANNONICAL CHARM. IVAN TEOFILOVʼS POETRY IN THE 1960s
Abstract
The text traces the appearance of Ivan Teofiov on the Bulgarian literary
scene and the current take of his first poem collections – Heaven and All Stars
(1963) and Amphitheater (1968). The study examines the poetic work of Ivan
Teofilov in the context of the 1960s and the manifestations of disagreement
with the literary canon of the time. The text pursues what is uncharacteristic for
the canon imagery in the lyrics of Ivan Teofilov and explores the reasons for it.
Also, the text differentiates the imagery from other examples of canonical noncompliance
in the 1960s and defines it as a physiognomic work that refuses to
take on the problems of socialist existence – it does not directly criticize it, but
searches for new ways to establish itself.
