THE REVERSED LOVE TRIANGLE IN ERIC-EMMANUEL SCHMITT`S PLAY “ENIGMATIC VARIATIONS”
Abstract
This paper offers a possible interpretation of the way a love triangle can
be flipped upside down, as demonstrated by Eric Schmitt in his play
“Enigmatic Variations”. He shows us the two sides of love: eros and agape,
embodied by the characters of Znorko and Larsen. The third point of this
triangle is Hellena, a common love interest for both men and the one who
swaps eros and agape. At the end of the play, the absence of Helena is not an
obstacle to Znorko and Larsen keeping their love alive by writing letters to
each other.
