DOES GRAMMATICAL GENDER HAVE SEMANTICS? (OBSERVATIONS ON THE GENDER CATEGORY OF NOUNS IN BULGARIAN)

Abstract

The present paper deals with the semantics of the lexical-grammatical category of gender in contemporary Bulgarian: the only issue related to that category, which scientists have certain disagreements about. We examine inanimate nouns, nouns that name animals and personal nouns, the last ones being the most challenging ones. We examine points of view of different authors and present our opinion on the formal-semantic opposition in the category.
