This paper traces the development of the Theory of functional-semantic categories (functional-semantic fields) created in the 1960s by the Russian linguist A. V. Bondarko. Since then, the theory has gained vast popularity throughout the world. Having applied it to Bulgarian for the first time – both in a synchronic description of language and in contrastive studies of Bulgarian and other languages, the author of this work offers numerous new ideas about the framing and structuring of functional-semantic fields and microfields.en_US
