IN SEARCH OF THE LOST WORDS OR ON THE FILLING OF GAPS IN THE TEXT OF HRELYO’S EPITAPH

Abstract

The object of examination in the present report is the Hrelyo’s tomb inscription. The purpose of this work is to restore an obscure abbreviation in the text and to comment and correct several inaccuracies that have been mechanically reprinted in the editions up to now. A good knowledge of the Old Bulgarian language used at the time of Hrelyo Dragovol, with its vocabulary and grammar, turns out to be not enough to answer the questions posed. An insight into the palaeographic characteristics and, above all, the knowledge of the textological patterns during the Middle Ages help to fully and accurately study this epigraphic monument.
