dc.description.abstract | In this paper we examine the status of dependent clauses in representative
grammar books and manuals published during the 19th century. The corpus
consists of books by ĐuraDaničić, Jovan Bošković, AdolfоVeber, PetarBudmani,
StojanNovaković, and TomislavMaretić. We have established that the dependent
clause has a different status in different grammar books. Some authors, aside from
giving the basic definition, exclude chapters about dependent clauses, some
incorporate the clause within morphological chapters, while others include
additional aspects, such as word order or the status of tenses within dependent
clauses. When it comes to the categorization of dependent clauses, the majority of
authors choose a combination of a formal criterion (type of conjunction) and a
semantic criterion. The only exception is Stojan Novaković who divides
dependent clauses based on a functional criterion. | en_US |
