The paper presents a study and an analysis of cognitive metaphors in the speech of contemporary Bulgarian politicians. This study aims to present three different ways in which metaphors can be identified in discourse. The first approach concerns the Pragglejaz Group's MIP for finding metaphorically used words. The second approach concerns the five-step MIPVU procedure – a way in which one can move from words identified as metaphorically used to the related basic conceptual structures. The third approach (Charteris-Black) focuses on other linguistic forms of metaphor expression such as mapping into a conceptual structure. All three approaches are applicable in empirical studies of corpus data from contemporary Bulgarian political speeches.en_US
