The article is devoted to the issue of humanizing the process of teaching English by means of fiction. The author points out that over the past three decades, the use of fiction in teaching English as a foreign language has attracted more and more attention. The main advantages of the use of fiction are revealed in the teaching of grammar, phonology and lexicology: fiction is a tool for overcoming the language barrier, and not a special subject of study. Attention is paid to the historical review of English teaching methodology in relation to the types of texts used in the classroom, to the principles of fictional work selection so that the lexical complexity of the text corresponds to the level of students’ language training, and so that effective interaction among the text, the environment and the reader is provided. The role of fiction for the interactive character of the English classroom is explained: nowadays, many teachers prefer 20th and 21st c. writers, since contemporary literature is not only able to engage students in an interesting reading, but is also written in a language that corresponds to the current communicative realities.en_US
