The article offers a new approach to the characters in Emilia Dvoryanova’s and Valeri Stefanov’s novels by outlining the way these characters are constructed. Since the two writers are part of today’s literary context and due to the limited critical attention or studies devoted to their writings, the paper establishes two new terms to explain the specificity of their characters, namely, character patterns and character constructs. The terms originate in Gerard Genette’s notion of intertextuality, which means that we always have in mind two other terms – hypotext and hypertext. The paper brings to the foreground some examples of relations between hypotext and hypertext, each of them using the character pattern to a different extent to construct its own character construct. Nuanced stylizations, such as parody, irony and travesty, or in some cases (especially in Dvoryanova’s novels) tribute, are examined in a larger text, the author’s dissertation.en_US
