The theme of death which is steadily present in the poetry of Konstantin Pavlov sets a wide range of receptive opportunities and reveals essential characteristics of his poetic world. The object of consideration in this text are the specific variants in which the theme is realized. It is conceivable as a sanction and as a way of defending personal liberty. Inscribed into modern man’s quest for self-establishment, death unfolds as both a tedious ritual and a desired final.

In, and via his meeting with, death the animal hero in Emilian Stanev’s animalist prose fiction transforms from something “silent”, enclosed in his own nature, into something “speaking” to, and about, humans. It turns into an other, different, way of understanding our essence, of perceiving the secrets of our own existence – we thus gain an opportunity to understand not only what we are, but also what we can be.
